Over the last couple of years, skateboard organizations have come together to promote skateboarding while also giving back to their communities and people in need. The 2012 Skate. Build. Grow is the first major project for the Skateboard Association. We are excited to get skateboarding crews together and make a difference on a huge scale.
Formed in 2002, the MHSA have travelled all over the world doing humanitarian work. They built and ran on of Canada’s largest indoor skateparks, organized some of Canada’s largest competitions and even traveled to Nigeria to each skateboarding and build the foundation for a children’s hospital.
This was only possible through thousands of volunteer man-hours and tens of thousands of dollars raised. Unfortunately, in early 2011, the MHSA’s building collapse due to a record snowfall. It completely destroyed the 20,000-sq/ft park.
While devastated, we were not defeated. Just one week after the collapse we conducted a bottle drive to raise money for other individuals who lost their homes. Raising $1000 for the local women’s homeless shelter.
Founded in February 2010, the ESA have organized dozens of events, which have raised thousands for cancer search, homelessness and local youth shelters.
The inspiration for the ESA was the reaction to the loss of not one but two of Edmonton’s most amazing skateboarders, Nathan Matthews and Tyler “Teebs” Stuart. They both lost their battles with cancer and it created shockwaves through the community.
For the very first ESA event, we organized bottle drives, fundraisers, and a head-shaving event and donated over $13,000 to the Terry Fox Foundation.
While we’ve had tremendous success in Canada, our vision is to promote skateboarding on a much larger scale. In the past, our members have been involved in humanitarian missions across Canada, Africa, and Mexico. Now we want to use the passion to execute our most ambitious trip yet.
Since 2010, our members have been discussing a unique trip that unites skateboarders in our various associations with professional skateboarders who are passionate about improving the lives of the less fortunate.
Our goal is to organize a team and that will travel from Edmonton to LA, then from LA to Mexico to assist in various humanitarian missions.
We plan to document the entire trip with a team of professional filmers and photographers to entertain family and friends and raise awareness for our cause.
It's home to the most famous street spots, the best skateboard parks, as well as an incredible amount of skateboarders. An essential part of our mission to Mexico is to stop in LA to help any local humanitarian organizations while we are there.
With the collapse of Medicine Hat's indoor skateboard park, we've come to understand living without a place to call home. With that in mind, we plan to travel to Ensenada to build houses of homeless families. There's an organization call YWAM located in San Diego that is focused on helping families. They offer a package that cost roughly $6000 in exchange for materials to build a brand new home. These homes take two days to build.
For this project we'll have a team of 40 to 50 skateboards and build 2 to 3 homes. Our goal is to parter with companies within the skateboard industry in building these homes. We would love to have professional skateboards join use for the 2 days to complete this project.
We are committed to this project, however as an not-for-profit we need support to get it done. We have fundraised thousands for the trip to LA and Ensenada, but this plan needs additional funding in order to get it all done right. The financial cost for this project is over $80,000 Cnd. We are extremely proud of our team and what has been done thus far. But your financial support ensures the safe and successful complete mission.
